Flash vs. SSD: Choose the Right Drive by Key Specs

Flash is the chip technology; SSDs are complete devices with controllers and firmware built around flash memory.

Flash storage refers to non-volatile memory chips storing data as electrical charges, while SSDs are finished devices combining flash with controllers, firmware, and interfaces. NAND dominates modern SSDs due to superior density and cost, with cell-type variations SLC, TLC, and QLC offering different speed-to-capacity tradeoffs.

Key purchasing factors include NAND type, interface choice between SATA and NVMe, form factor, endurance measured in total bytes written, and cache behavior.

NVMe drives communicate directly with CPUs over PCIe, achieving 4,500-7,000 MB/s versus SATA's 550 MB/s ceiling. Performance specifications vary significantly with block size and queue depth, so validating datasheet assumptions against the actual workload remains essential.
