AWS CloudShell Now Includes a Built-In Visual File Editor

AWS, Monday, August 17th, 2026

AWS CloudShell adds a GUI file editor launched with a single 'edit' command, with no setup required.

AWS CloudShell now includes a built-in visual file editor that launches directly from a shell session with a single edit command and no setup.

CloudShell provides a browser-based shell that uses existing AWS Management Console credentials, making it popular with developers, DevOps engineers and cloud administrators managing scripts, infrastructure as code, agentic workflows and AWS Lambda workflows. The new editor brings a familiar GUI editing experience into the console session.

Previously, editing files in CloudShell meant working in terminal-based editors. The capability is available at no additional cost wherever CloudShell is offered.
