NHIs act as digital stand-ins for traditional human users, orchestrating communications and performing tasks across systems. A machine identity pairs a 'secret'-such as an encrypted password, token, or key-with permissions granted by a destination server. This setup functions similarly to a passport and visa system but for machines, thus making it crucial to protect these identities.
