Why CISOs Should Use Zero-Trust Security For IoT

TechTarget, Wednesday, July 15th, 2026

Zero trust is the most practical way to secure IoT, using continuous verification and microsegmentation instead of perimeter defenses.

IoT devices deliver operational benefits but introduce major cybersecurity risk through poor visibility, weak built-in security, and no support for endpoint protection agents.

Frameworks such as NIST and IEC 62443 exist, but zero trust has emerged as superior for IoT because it applies "never trust, always verify" at the network level rather than on resource-constrained devices.

Microsegmentation and least-privilege policies prevent a compromised device from scanning and infecting other network components.

Implementation challenges include legacy systems, real-time performance requirements, and writing granular policies across thousands of endpoints.
