Federal Judge Approves Landmark $1.5 Billion Anthropic Copyright Settlement

Techstrong.ai, Tuesday, July 21st, 2026

A judge approved a record $1.5 billion settlement between Anthropic and authors over AI training data.

US District Judge Araceli Martinez-Olguin finalized an agreement providing roughly $3,000 per book to copyright holders whose works were used without permission to develop Claude.

The settlement covers approximately 500,000 works, and over 91% of identified rights holders have already claimed payouts.

While described as the largest copyright recovery in US history, critics argue the compensation is insufficient and that the settlement establishes no legal precedent because it resolves the case before appellate review of fair use. Other copyright suits against Google, Meta, OpenAI and Midjourney continue.
