IBM and The University of Chicago Demonstrate Quantum Advantage, Establishing Trusted Quantum Computation on Logical Circuits

IBM, Thursday, July 30th, 2026

Researchers encoded 70 logical qubits with a new error correction method to solve a classically intractable problem.

IBM and the University of Chicago demonstrated quantum advantage using a new error correction method to encode 70 logical qubits and solve a classically intractable problem.

Working at the logical qubit level rather than the physical level is the threshold the field has been working toward, since logical encoding is what makes long computations survivable.

The result establishes a framework for trusted quantum computation on logical circuits, where the answer can be relied upon without classical verification.

IBM published the work alongside two other quantum advantage demonstrations. It is a research milestone rather than a commercially deployable capability.
