Databricks' Smart Routing in Unity AI Gateway matches frontier quality at over 30% lower cost per coding task.
Databricks introduced Smart Routing in Unity AI Gateway, describing how it built task-aware routing across models and harnesses to cut costs on real-world coding tasks internally.
The post notes the price and performance frontier for coding tasks features enormous diversity, with 33 new models released in 2026 alone.
Prior benchmarking against the Databricks codebase found that models cluster into capability tiers and that much everyday work, such as flipping a flag, a single-file edit or a well-scoped bug fix, does not require the most expensive option. Smart Routing matches frontier quality with more than 30% lower cost per task.
