Why AI Infrastructure Must Be Built in the Open

Red Hat, Thursday, August 20th, 2026

Red Hat argues no single company can keep pace with simultaneous change across every layer of the AI stack.

In the third part of a series, Red Hat asks who should build the infrastructure powering AI, following earlier posts on inference efficiency as an economic necessity and sovereign AI requiring infrastructure independence.

It argues AI infrastructure influences far more than performance, determining how quickly organizations can adopt new hardware, integrate emerging models and adapt as capabilities advance. Every layer of AI technology is changing simultaneously, with new foundation models released constantly.

Red Hat's conclusion is that AI is moving too fast for any one company to keep pace alone. Open development is presented as the only structure that can absorb that rate of change.
