IBM's next-generation dual-architecture processor will let mainframes run Arm-native Linux alongside z/OS.
IBM has unveiled a next-generation dual-architecture processor for IBM Z and LinuxONE designed to bring Arm-native applications to its flagship mainframes and servers.
The processor is being developed to let organizations run Arm-native Linux environments simultaneously with z/OS and Linux on IBM Z, on the same machine.
That broadens software choice for enterprise computing considerably, since the large body of software built for Arm becomes available without leaving the platform. Customers would retain IBM's established security, reliability and scale characteristics while gaining access to an architecture their other infrastructure already targets.
