How We Eliminated $1 Million a Year of Wasted AI Agent Spend in One Hour

Databricks, Tuesday, September 1st, 2026

Seven small MCP server bugs silently burned about $1.2M a year in tokens and engineering time at Databricks.

Databricks engineers found that seven small bugs in their MCP servers were quietly costing roughly $499,000 a year in tokens plus 12,000 engineering hours a year, about $1.2 million in total.

The failures were invisible because agents silently retry broken tool calls rather than surfacing errors. Unity Gateway traced every MCP tool call and Genie One let the team find the largest sources of wasted spend using natural language, after which coding agents shipped the fixes within an hour.

The broader lesson is to design tools for how LLMs actually use them, handling ambiguous or unexpected inputs gracefully instead of crashing.
