Cohere released North Small Translate 1.0, a 218-billion parameter mixture-of-experts translation model covering more than 50 languages, positioned around speed and cost efficiency for sovereign deployment.
The licensing is the detail buyers must check: the weights are available under CC BY-NC 4.0, which permits research but requires a commercial licence for production use.
That is a departure from Cohere's Apache-licensed North Mini Code and part of a broader industry tightening of open-weight terms, so licence review should precede architectural commitment.
