Vertiv, ST Telemedia and Baudouin tested how AI GPU load swings destabilize generators and how UPS smoothing fixes it.
Vertiv, ST Telemedia Global Data Centers and Baudouin tested the Vertiv PowerUPS 9000 on generator power using an AI load simulator replicating H100 GPU transients that spike every 40 milliseconds.
Without mitigation, generators struggled to hold voltage and frequency, and above about 75% AI load the UPS could not synchronize with bypass. Battery-based load smoothing at just 20% cut voltage and frequency variation from about 10% to 0.5%, with no measurable battery degradation over 300 hours and normal generator wear.
Recommendations include higher UPS slew rates, double conversion mode and gradual load transfers.
