AI Panic Is Giving CIOs a New Trust Problem

InformationWeek, Thursday, September 17th, 2026

When frontier labs publicly disagree about AI risk, CIOs should promise process and diligence, never outcomes.

Anthropic's Dario Amodei has called for slowing frontier AI development and OpenAI has backed stronger safety measures, while Nvidia's Jensen Huang and Meta's Mark Zuckerberg push back on a coordinated slowdown.

Employees, boards and customers read the same headlines, so the fear reaches organizations whose actual AI use is far simpler: summarizing documents, writing code, automating workflows. David Linthicum's advice is that a CIO can promise process, meaning governed deployment, human oversight, continuous monitoring and transparency about what is and is not known, but should never promise outcomes such as AI never erring or never being misused.

Offering that kind of certainty makes the organization more vulnerable when something goes wrong.
