TapeArk Moves Tape Libraries to Public Cloud VTLs for Lower Cost and Higher Speed

TapeArk migrates legacy tape archives into cloud virtual tape libraries, making decades of data searchable and AI-ready.
Chris Mellor reports that TapeArk ingests customers' old tape archives at its data centers, reads them into cache, generates metadata and loads them into public cloud virtual tape libraries, eliminating legacy drives, software and floor space.
Its Nexus SaaS platform lets customers view, analyze and restore that data and connects existing backup applications to the virtual tapes.
Examples include Almirall's 50 years of research data and Ontada's 150 million oncology documents, both moved to Azure.
TapeArk claims a year of LTO-1 vault storage costs as much as about four years in Azure, and that LTO-10's lack of backward compatibility adds to the case.
