Verizon CTO: 6G Needs a Breakthrough for AI Uplink Demand

Verizon CTO Yago Tenorio warns AI devices could push uplink-to-downlink ratios toward 1:1, beyond incremental fixes.
Mobile networks are built for downlink-heavy traffic, with typical ratios of 9:1 or 8:2, but Verizon expects AI applications that need continuous contextual awareness, such as smart glasses streaming sensor, video or audio data to an AI agent, to push that ratio toward 1:1.
Speaking at RCR Wireless' 6G Forum, CTO Yago Tenorio said techniques such as sub-band full duplex help.
However, he said the industry is missing an architectural breakthrough to avoid an uplink crisis.
One idea he raised is fully decoupling uplink and downlink, with pervasive uplink receivers deployed close to users.
