Engineers Lose 17+ Days a Year to AI Rework
LeadDev, Tuesday, October 20th, 2026
An ActiveState survey finds AI coding gains are offset by rework costing at least 139 hours per engineer per year.
LeadDev reports on an ActiveState survey of over 300 security, platform and engineering leaders at companies with 1,000+ employees.
43% say at least 10% of engineering time goes to fixing or revisiting AI-assisted code, a floor of 139 hours, or 17 working days, per engineer a year, which for a 100-person team equals about seven engineers' annual capacity.
The report cites DORA and Copilot research showing similar downstream bottlenecks.
It also finds only 31% have formally quantified the cost of unmanaged open source risk.
