How Quantum Computing Can Work in Enterprise IT

Computer Weekly, Monday, October 19th, 2026

Quantum's near-term enterprise role is hybrid: classical AI and HPC do most work, routing the hardest cases to a quantum processor.

At the City Quantum & AI Summit, speakers described quantum computing working alongside CPUs, GPUs and AI, with NVIDIA's Nicholas Harrigan calling a useful quantum computer an AI supercomputer with quantum hardware built in.

Oxford Quantum Circuits routes only the most ambiguous cases to a quantum stage in radar work with QinetiQ and fraud detection with Mastercard.

Cleveland Clinic, IBM and Algorithmiq won a $2 million prize for a quantum-classical drug workflow, while GSK's Anthony Rowe cited about 2,000 logical qubits as a threshold.

Speakers also discussed financing, procurement barriers and NATO's call to prepare the ecosystem.
