Open-Weight AI Models Are Changing the Equation. Here's What CIOs Should Experiment With Next

CIO, Friday, October 23rd, 2026

A technology leader urges CIOs to try open-weight AI models hands-on, noting the gap with frontier models is closing fast.

Enterprise AI strategy has depended on a few closed model providers, bringing cost, lock-in and opacity, but open-weight models from Meta, Google and others are now challenging that default.

As of July 2026, open-weight models made up 36% of token volume on Vercel's AI Gateway, up from 11% in April.

The author describes moving a personal assistant agent from a ChatGPT subscription to open-weight models on Ollama's cloud, which gave much more usage for the same monthly fee.

His main takeaway is that the gap between open-weight and frontier models is narrowing faster than many expect, and his advice to CIOs is to stop debating and start structured experiments.
