With Open-Weight AI, More of the Security Burden Falls on Enterprises

Help Net Security, Monday, October 19th, 2026

A Microsoft and NVIDIA paper warns that firms running open-weight models must supply the guardrails and monitoring a provider would otherwise handle.

Microsoft and NVIDIA published a joint paper on managing the risks of open-weight AI models, whose weights anyone can download, modify and run.

The authors say weight openness alone does not determine risk; the model, its use and the safeguards around it do.

Closed models usually come with provider guardrails and security monitoring, while open-weight models are often distributed as bare files, and holders can alter or remove safety behavior, so provider safeguards are no longer universally enforceable.

Enterprises running these models on their own infrastructure therefore need to supply those safety and security controls themselves.
