The Next 10 Years of KubeVirt

The New Stack, Monday, October 26th, 2026

A decade after Red Hat founded it, KubeVirt is expanding into GPUs, confidential VMs and pluggable virtualization stacks on Kubernetes.

KubeVirt, started by Red Hat in 2016 to run virtual machines alongside containers on Kubernetes, is a CNCF incubating project with contributors from Nvidia, Microsoft, AMD, Intel and SUSE working toward graduation.

Its enhancement queue has grown to more than 100 items, and Dynamic Resource Allocation for GPUs reached beta in v1.9, with the same model extending to host devices, SR-IOV and CPUs.

Confidential VM support varies, from IBM Secure Execution at GA to Arm CCA still in development.

The project is also building structured plugins and pluggable virtualization stacks, and its future depends on turning proposals into stable capabilities.
