[Cybersecurity Awareness Month] Why Your Best Incident Reporting Tool Is Behavioral, Not Software

KnowBe4, Monday, October 26th, 2026

KnowBe4 argues incident reporting is a behavioral challenge, citing shame, hero syndrome and diffusion of responsibility as barriers.

Writing for Cybersecurity Awareness Month, KnowBe4 Lead CISO Advisor Javvad Malik argues that the best incident reporting tool is behavioral rather than software.

He identifies three reasons employees stay quiet: shame about mistakes, hero syndrome where staff try to fix incidents themselves, and diffusion of responsibility where people assume others have reported.

He recommends thanking reporters, separating what happened from who is at fault, having leaders visibly report issues, and making reporting faster than falling for a threat.

The post also promotes KnowBe4's secret-agent themed awareness month resource kit.
