The Power Challenge Behind Hyperscale AI Expansion
Data Center Knowledge, Tuesday, October 27th, 2026
AI data center growth is outpacing grid capacity, pushing developers to build or contract their own power generation, IIR data shows.
Data Center Knowledge reports, citing Industrial Info Resources, that Microsoft, Meta, Amazon and Google are expected to spend over $700 billion on data centers this year, up from about $64 billion in 2018.
Despite more than 500 local moratoria across 42 states, new project announcements continue, with the US and Canada pipeline at about $4.75 trillion.
US operational data center load has reached 53 GW, up from 23 GW in 2023.
With utility queues stretching to 2034, developers are increasingly building their own generation, mainly gas, though major turbine makers are sold out through 2029, while nuclear, storage and solar projects are also growing.
