When GraphQL Earns Its Place in an Enterprise Application, and When It Doesn't

InfoWorld, Tuesday, October 27th, 2026

An InfoWorld piece explains when GraphQL pays off in enterprise apps, mainly for connected data across many screens, and when REST is better.

In an InfoWorld opinion piece, developer Vaishnavi Khosla says GraphQL works best when screens need different slices of highly interconnected data and teams communicate closely, since a new screen needs a new query rather than a new endpoint.

She warns of costs including harder caching, expensive nested queries that require depth and cost limits, and per-object and per-field authorization, which should live in the business logic layer.

She poses five questions about clients, data interconnection, schema ownership and authorization before adopting it.

She suggests piloting on one read-heavy screen and keeping REST for command-style operations.
