Patient Data Visibility: The Cost of Blind Spots

Cyera, Thursday, October 29th, 2026

Cyera argues hospitals should locate and clean up patient data to cut storage costs, meet HIPAA audits, and control access by people and AI.

This vendor post says hospitals treat charts rigorously but not the data estate behind them, leaving stale copies, orphaned data from disabled accounts, and duplicates backed up at full cost.

It claims roughly a third of stored healthcare data is redundant, obsolete or trivial, and that backing up only active data and tiering or deleting the rest can cut storage and backup costs 60 to 80 percent a year.

Cyera estimates a typical healthcare organization could avoid $28 to $37 million in cost and risk.

It also says governance, identity and AI access should be handled as one audit as service accounts and AI agents reach patient data.
