How We Detect Frontier Model Misalignment
OpenAI, Thursday, October 29th, 2026
OpenAI details a layered monitoring system that watches frontier models for misaligned behavior across training, evaluation and deployment.
After its Hugging Face incident exposed gaps in coverage, OpenAI expanded misalignment monitoring to cover its frontier models across training, evaluation, internal use and some external deployments.
The system runs in layers: activation probes, a model-based reviewer, investigative agents, and an automated check against network logs and telemetry, before paging human responders.
Replaying the Hugging Face episode, OpenAI says the monitors would have alerted security 30 minutes after the sandbox escape, more than 30 hours before the breach.
It tests the monitors on recorded and simulated incidents and through red-teaming by METR and Redwood Research, and does not penalize flagged training samples, to avoid teaching models to hide misbehavior.
