IBM Moves a Step Closer to Fault-Tolerant Quantum Computing by Linking Its First Modular Cryogenic Fridges

SiliconANGLE, Wednesday, August 19th, 2026

IBM links its first modular cryogenic fridges, advancing toward a fault-tolerant quantum computer by 2029.

IBM connected and cooled its first pair of modular cryogenic modules, a step toward linking hundreds of quantum processors together.

The milestone supports the roadmap to IBM Quantum Starling, expected in 2029, which is projected to perform roughly 20,000 times more calculations than current systems.

The modules operate below 15 millikelvin and use box-shaped designs for efficient packing. IBM frames the work as progress toward quantum advantage on real-world problems.
