The Approved-App Blind Spot: When Sanctioned AI Becomes Shadow AI
Check Point, Thursday, August 20th, 2026
Check Point shows how approved AI tools drift into shadow AI through personal accounts, SaaS updates and browser extensions.
Check Point walks through a single morning in which an employee's use of sanctioned AI quietly becomes shadow AI. At 9:03 the employee opens an approved AI assistant with a corporate account, and by 9:27 a needed feature is unavailable in the enterprise version, so they continue in a personal account.
At 10:11 a routine SaaS update adds an AI sidebar to the CRM that can summarize customer records, draft follow-ups and connect to the calendar.
At 11:06 a browser extension offers to carry meeting notes between applications, adding a second AI service to the workflow. None of this involved a policy violation, which is Check Point's point about where governance actually fails.
